Verizon Removes New Surcharge for DSL Service (Wall Street Journal) Thu Aug 31, 2006 at 08:57:46
Amy Schatz reports on page B3 of today's Wall Street Journal that Verizon has "reversed course" on a new fee it imposed on broadband customers after the Feds dropped the universal service surcharge.
A Verizon spokesman said the company had "listened" to its customers. The Federal Communications Commission took the first step last Friday toward a formal investigation of the fee, which Verison said was for "supplier surcharges."
Said FCC Commissioner Michael Copps: "Getting this out in the open put an end to this charade of new surcharges. This shows again the need for constant consumer and commission vigilance."
(Editorial: All right, let's have some vigilance on Net Neutrality. Talk about plans for surcharges!)
